Zooloretto - Initial Impressions

I've finally gotten the chance to play the Spiel des Jahres-winning game Zooloretto, and overall I'm pretty impressed with it.  After picking up one of the five copies available in a recent Tangathon (with my mad online-buyin' skillz), I finally got the package last week.

On Saturday, I convinced my wife Gwen to give it a shot, so we played a couple of games with the 2-player variant.  I liked the game, but I found that the 1 and 2 spot trucks plus the relatively fewer number of different animal types made it very easy to avoid animals that you didn't want to get.  In other words, both Gwen and I managed to fill our Zoos without much trouble or complication.  Overall, it was entertaining but a little too light and boring at times.  My rating at that time would have been in the 6.5-7 range.

Then last night I had the chance to play a 4-player game, and it's definitely much better.  This game needs the extra chaos of having more people, as well as the near necessity of taking trucks with unwanted animals.  It makes for tougher choices and the need for more careful placement of animals on the trucks.  Even though I sucked a root in the game (mainly because I screwed up and grabbed a truck before I completed all the money actions I wanted to do in the last turn), I still had a lot of fun.  Plus, I see a lot more depth there than I initially thought.  My current rating is therefore a 7.5, which is probably going to trend up to an 8 if I have another positive experience or two.
