More Hardware on the Shelf for Dominion

As reported on Boardgame News, Dominion added another award to its already huge collection recently by picking up the Deutscher Spiele Preis for 2009.  Just in case you're not familiar with this award, it is more of a "gamer's game" award voted on by more serious gamers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.  The results (along with votes received) were as follows:

On a related note, I also haven't mentioned the finalists for the International Gamer's Awards for 2009 yet either.

General Strategy Games, Multi-Player:

I've only played 6 of these, and my choice would be Steam.  But, of course, I fully expect Dominion to take this one as well.  While I haven't played any of the games (or even know much of anything about them) in the other categories, I'll list them below just in case some of my readers might be interested.

General Strategy Games, Two-Player:

  • 2 de Mayo
  • Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear!
  • Day & Night
  • Die Saulon der Erde: Duell der Baumeister
  • Kamisado

Historical Simulations:

  • Barbarossa: Kiev to Rostov
  • Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear!
  • Devil's Cauldron
  • Espana 1936
  • Fields of Fire
  • Red Dragon Rising: The Coming War With China
  • Spanish Eagles
  • Storm Over Stalingrad
  • Unhappy King Charles
  • Warriors of God

Which 6 have you tried? I've noticed you rate Steam highly (from your top 100 list too). Any reason I should consider Steam as opposed to Chicago Express for my next purchase?

As far as Steam vs. Chicago Express, my recommendation is to buy both!  (Note that Steam is #7 on my list and CE is #21)

But seriously, Steam and CE are very different games.  Steam is all about managing your income, making an effective network, and delivering goods.  CE is about making good investments, being opportunistic with the available actions, and using emergent alliances to make money.  Steam is a little more complicated to play (rules complexity and all), but CE is more difficult for me to figure out strategy and win (which I have still yet to do).  Steam is longer (~ 90-120 min), compared to <60 min for CE.  Almost the only thing that they have in common is the train theme and the use of money, but they are both a complete blast to play.  As I see it, you really can't go wrong with either one.
