I Think I've Converted a Whole Pack of Werewolves!

My posting here on the old blog has been a bit sparse lately due to the fact that we had a brand-new group of new graduate nurses starting at my hospital start a couple of weeks ago.  And since I'm the co-coordinator of the New Grad program, I've been extra occupied with taking care of them and getting our orientation days together.

But anyway, why talk about this here on my gaming blog?  Well, something that I use both as an ice breaker and to fill in time between guest speakers (or for speakers that bail on us) are games!  To help get to know each other better, we pulled out questions from Would You Rather...?, which can be a pretty interesting experience considering that I actually own the "Twisted, sick and wrong. Late Night" version.

The big hit with the group, however, has been playing The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow.  There are 20 of them, so we're pushing the limits of how big the group can be, but they are just loving it and coming back for more!  I've played it with them three times so far, and they requested it even on a day when I had to teach a different class (meaning that the other co-coordinator had to fill in as moderator).

Of course, in one game, one of the New Grads stepped in and let me actually play.  I drew a Werewolf card and was elected Sheriff, so I was pretty much doomed to die early.  Thankfully, even with my death, no other werewolves were discovered and I shared their win posthumously.  In fact, I'm pretty sure that the werewolves have won all but one of the games we've played.  I've introduced more of the alternate roles as we've gone along, and I think that I'll pick up the New Moon expansion this week just in case we have time to play it again on Thursday.

While I've played versions of Werewolf from time to time with different groups, I've never really played it with much consistency or with the same people with any regularity, so it's been a pretty cool experience for me as well.  I've been able to explore some of the different roles (and decided that the Little Girl, who gets to "peek" at the werewolves, is just way too broken) and see how the group's skill and assumptions change.  And, thankfully, playing the game does actually seem to accomplish it's overall goal, which would be to help them get to know each other better and build more of a group identity.

And heck, with how much they are getting into Werewolf, maybe I could find some new recruits for game night as well...

Our first pack of victorious Werewolves!

First of all, I'm extremely pleased with myself that I had to think for a minute before I caught your reference.

Better is the fact that no one even hinted at it (that I heard, anyway).  We actually have a very... shall we say, "mature" group of new graduates this year.  So the odds of such a reference are probably a lot lower than if we had all "straight through school" nurses.
